Repair of Me 109 at Comiso   2010-07-23 11:23:00 <Jerry Rosenthal>
Does anyone remember who repaired and made flyable a ME-109 at Comiso? =
After being repaired, Col. Tic Tokaz flew this plane. Can anyone verify =
this incident and provide the names of the guys who did the work?

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I'm unaware of any names, but Georges Kunzel sent me a 488th Me109 photo of what may very well be the plane of which you speak:

Perhaps you'll recognize the guy in the photo?

Don:

John Tokaz (son of Col. Tik Tokaz, sometimes 340th Group Commander) upon
viewing this picture said,"The individual sort of looks like Alex Parrish.
In the beginning he flew with the 488th before moving to the 489th I think
as squadron commander."

Any comments anyone?

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

There's a picture of Major Parrish in the 489th Bomb Squadron Book on this page:

http://www.warwingsart.com/12thAirForce/command.html

I always wondered why there wasn't any information about Major Parrish in a book written by his fellow officers in the 489th, but you provide a reasonable explanation. Since Parrish was originally with the 488th, the 489th guys probably didn't have his information when they edited the book.

I apologize for the poor quality of the image but looking at the original, I can see it's probably the same guy in the picture of the 488th-marked Me109 on Sicily (see my original reply).

The 489th book says that some of the captured Me109s were fully operational.

The 57th Fighter Group captured at least one Me109 and two 57th pilots, one in a P-47, and the other in an Me109, made a wager as to who could win at simulated combat. The guy in the Me109 won:

More about the Me109s captured on Sicily with pictures can be seen on this website:
